SMITHFIELD-SELMA WILL HAVE NEW FOOTBALL COACH

SMITHFIELD-- Smithfield-Selma will hire a new football coach for next season.

According to reports by several media outlets, Frank Lassiter has resigned as the head football coach and as a social studies teacher at Smithfield-Selma, according to athletic director Mike Joyner.

Lassiter spent two seasons at Smithfield-Selma, replacing Anthony Barbour as head football coach before the 2010 season. The Spartans posted a 1-10 record in 2010 and were 0-11 this season.

"The search for the new head coach will begin immediately," said principal Michael Taylor in a written statement released to the media. Junior varsity baseball coach and former assistant football coach David Lawhon was named the interim football coach "to ensure there in continuous forward progress with all facets of our program," said Taylor.

Prior to coming to Smithfield-Selma, Lassiter was an assistant coach at Western Alamance, where he was a part of the 3-A state championship.
