REAGAN SOPHOMORE WINS 4-A INDIVIDUAL CROWN; ATHENS DRIVE TAKES THIRD TEAM TITLE IN FOUR YEARS
PINEHURST – Sophomore Victoria Allred of Pfafftown Ronald Reagan shot the day's best round on Tuesday and went on to capture the individual title in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championships at Pinehurst number six.
Allred was one shot off the pace after Monday's opening 18 holes with a 75, but her 74 in the final round gave her a 149 total, good for a three-shot victory over Charlotte Ardrey Kell's Allyson Markiewicz at 152. Raleigh Athens Drive's Sarah Bae, one of the first day co- leaders, had a 79 in the final round for a 153 total, good for third. Watauga's Savannah Wood placed fourth, five shots off the pace.
The course is set at par 71 and a 5,735-yard layout for the two-day, 36-hole championship.
Athens Drive won its third team title in the last four years, putting together a 240 on the second day to finish at 481, 10 shots ahead of Reagan. Ardrey Kell, the first day team leader by one shot, was third at 493 and Pinecrest was fourth at 515.
The best three scores of a team counted toward the team totals, and a total of 14 teams and 78 golfers competed in the event, the ninth year that the sport has been classified. It was the first time that three separate championships have been held and the 31st year for state championship competition in the sport.
