3A WOMEN'S GOLF
FOUR TEAMS WITHIN FOUR SHOTS OF LEAD IN 3-A WOMEN'S GOLF
FOXFIRE VILLAGE— Four teams are within four shots of the lead after Monday's opening day of play in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state 3-A women’s golf championships at the West Course at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club in Foxfire Village.
Ledford had a 277 and holds a slim one-shot lead over Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons and Northern Guilford, with Waxhaw Marvin Ridge in fourth at 281.
The course is set at par 72 and a 5,787-yard layout for the championship.
The best three scores of a team count toward the team totals, and a total of 13 teams and 78 golfers are competing in the event, the ninth year that the sport has been classified. It is the first time that three separate championships have been held and the 31st year for state championship competition in the sport.
Junior Tara Simmons of Pikeville Charles B. Aycock had a 76 on a chilly day and has a six-stroke advantage in the individual race over Taylor Penzer of Northern Guilford. Rachel Jones of Southwestern Randolph had an 84 and a trio of golfers are tied at 85.
The final day of play is scheduled to get underway at 9:00 on Tuesday morning.
