RODON FIRES SHUTOUT TO LEAD HOLLY SPRINGS PAST ROBERSON

ZEBULON -- Carlos Rodon of Holly Springs fired a two-hit shutout to lead the Golden Hawks past T.C. Roberson 2-0 on Friday night in the first game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A baseball championship series at Five County Stadium.

Holly Springs improved its record to 26-2 in its first trip to the NCHSAA state championships and the Golden Hawks moved to within one victory of taking the best of three series. The 95th annual baseball championships will continue with game two scheduled in the 4-A series for Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Rodon improved his record to 11-0 on the season and lowered his 1.40 ERA, keeping the Rams at bay all night and striking out eight. He also helped his own cause by going two for three at the plate and driving home a run.

He got all the run support he needed in the third when Holly Springs plated two runs, one on a single by Justin Manning after Joe Roach had doubled and then his own run-scoring single.

The Golden Hawks got two more in the sixth on a two-run single by Kendal Thorpe.

Grant Petty with a double and Carson Bryant with a single provided the only Ram hits.

The Raleigh Sports Consortium and Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau are serving as host city sponsors for this championship series. Wendy’s is the presenting sponsor of the NCHSAA sports program.

SOUTH POINT EXPLODES FOR 12-6 VICTORY

RALEIGH– South Point rallied from a 6-5 deficit with a seven-run explosion in the sixth and rolled to a 12-6 victory over Northeast Guilford din the first game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A baseball championship series Friday night at Doak Stadium at North Carolina State University.

Luis Paula, who was charged with the loss for Northeast, had just given his team a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer. But the first seven Red Raiders to the plate in the sixth wound up scoring and snapped a 29-game Ram winning streak.

The bottom of the order did the major damage for South Point, with number-nine hitter Derek Perry going three for five with two runs batted in and Jeffrey Springs collecting two hits in three trips with three RBI. Spencer Wiles, who hit the first pitch of the game out of the park, was three for four with a double and homer and two RBI for the Red Raiders.

Josiel Colon of Northeast had two hits, including a solo home run, and scored three runs.

Jeffrey Springs went the distance on the mound for the winners and is now 11-0 on the season.

The 95th annual baseball championships will continue on Saturday afternoon with game two in the best-of-three 3-A series set for two o’clock.

South Point is now 26-2 and is seeking its first NCHSAA baseball title since 1981. Northeast, which hurt itself with six errors, is 29-2.
