HICKORY'S POSTON HAS RECORD ROUND IN NCHSAA 3-A GOLF
FOXFIRE VILLAGE — Hickory's J.T. Poston recorded the lowest round ever in North Carolina High School Athletic Association state golf tournament history to roar to the lead in the 26th annual state 3-A men’s golf championships at the Foxfire Golf and Country Club.
Poston, the defending individual champion, fired a blistering nine-under 63, with nine-hole totals of 32 and 31. He has a six-shot advantage over second-place Will Long of Gastonia Forestview with a 69, and William Register of Burlington Williams is seven strokes off the lead after shooting a 70.
Long finished in a tie for seventh in last year's championship, eight shots behind Poston.
The championship is being held on a par-72, 6,851-yard layout for the NCHSAA event.
Forestview, the runner-up in the team standings last year based on the score of the fifth player after finishing in a deadlock with Northern Guilford, has a three-shot advantage of Hickory and Burlington Williams. Forestview recorded a 288 to 291 for Hickory and Williams, with Asheboro in fourth at 301.
The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.
Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.
A total of 84 golfers began play in the two-day event. Action will resume at eight o’clock on Tuesday morning.
Wendy’s is the presenting sponsor of the NCHSAA sports program.
