UNION PINES MAKES NCHSAA BASEBALL
HISTORY
CAMERON-- Union Pines
High School worked its way into the North Carolina High School Athletic
Association record book with a thunderous home run barrage on Wednesday night.
Union Pines slammed 11 home runs to set a single game team record as
the Vikings defeated East Montgomery 16-9 in a game at Viking Field at Union
Pines.
The 11 home runs eclipsed the previous record of nine, jointly held
by East Wake from a 1983 win over Apex and Richmond Senior in a 1987 triumph
over West Robeson.
In addition, East Montgomery homered twice for a combined total of
13 in the game. The previous NCHSAA record for two teams was 10, with Athens
Drive hitting eight and Apex two in an 18-17 slugfest won by Athens Drive on
April 24, 2003.
Four different Union
Pines players had multiple homers in the game, while seven of 11 homers by the
Vikings were solo shots. Nic Collins and Justin Allred each had three home runs
for Union Pines, while Seth Breasseale and Gabe Gonzalez each two. Allred and
Collins each had five runs batted in.
Carson Kelly also had
a homer for the Vikings. Matthew Reynolds and Trevor Wilson hit home runs for
East Montgomery.
The 11 home runs by
the Vikings shattered the Union Pines school record of six, which was
established just over a week ago in a 17-2 victory over Overhills.
The Pilot newspaper
of Southern Pines first reported the achievement to the NCHSAA.
