CHANGING OF GUARD WITH WHITE OAK BASKETBALL

JACKSONVILLE -- Chris Grimes has been named the new men's head basketball coach at White Oak High School, according to the Jacksonville Daily News, now that veteran head coach Greg Grantham has stepped down.

This is Grimes’ first varsity head coaching job in basketball, but it isn’t the first time he’s been in charge of a program. He said he has head coaching experience in volleyball and tennis and that he is currently coaching boys’ tennis and is a physical education teacher at White Oak.

He was an assistant coach under Grantham during the 2010-11 season and also coached the junior varsity. Grantham has been head coach at White Oak for 18 years and his teams have won 333 games during that stretch.

Grantham, who also serves as White Oak's athletic director, came to White Oak after one year at Rosewood and four at SouthWest Edgecombe. Grantham's teams own 18 games or more nine times from 1996 to 2006  and the Vikings advanced to the NCHSAA Eastern Regionals in 1996, '97 and 2002.

The 30-year-old Grimes graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and received his Masters Degree from North Carolina Central. He came to White Oak after serving as an assistant to head coach Scott McInnes at Millbrook High School in Raleigh, from which Grimes graduated.
