STATESVILLE PAIR CAPTURES DOUBLES TITLE
BURLINGTON— Jacob Wright of Asheville T.C. Roberson won a pair of matches on Saturday to earn the singles title in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s tennis tournament championships at the Burlington Tennis Center.
Wright defeated Charlotte Catholic’s Daniel Tobben in a morning semifinal and then outdueled freshman Luke Synn of Hickory 6-0, 7-6(3) in the championship match.
Synn had knocked off surprising Trey McKee of Lake Norman in the semis, after McKee, the number four player qualifying from the West regional, had earned a couple of upset victories on Friday.
The Hickory player’s quest for a title was an attempt to keep championships in the family since Synn’s sister, Stephani, won the state 3-A women’s singles title in the fall.
Luke Gillis and Tripp Hawkins of Statesville earned the doubles title, beating Southeast Guilford’s Travis Sandman and Evan Hurley in a tough three-set match. The Statesville duo won the first set 6-1, dropped the second 6-3 and then took the decisive set 6-4.
Gillis and Hawkins had won the West regional title last weekend while Sandman and Hurley were earning top honors in the Midwest region.
Wendy’s and the Carolina Ford Dealers are presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
