RALEIGH -- Grace Baker of Charlotte Myers Park moved within one match of her fourth consecutive state championship appearance with a pair of wins on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women's tennis tournament championships at the Millbrook Exchange Park.
Baker lost only four games in four sets and will take on Lauren Frazier of Greenville Rose in a Saturday morning semifinal. Baker lost in three sets in last year's singles championship to Chloe Willetts of Winston-Salem R. J Reynolds, who is not competing due to injury
Baker was the 2008 state singles champ and runner-up in 2007 as a freshman.
The other singles semifinal will send Melissa Kandinata of Cary Green Hope against Natsuko Takayanagi of Northwest Guilford
In doubles, the Wilmington Hoggard duo of McKayla Zupan and Elizabeth Hodges survived a pair of grueling three-set matches to move into the semifinals. The Hoggard team will face South Mecklenburg's Abby Segodnia and Samantha Forlenza in one morning match, while Raleigh Broughton's Katie Kane and Maggie Kane will face Majdou Lavoie and Lauren Tuscano of Greensboro Grimsley.
Semifinals are scheduled for Saturday morning at 9 am with the winners advancing to the state championship matches later in the day.
Wendy's is the presenting sponsor of the NCHSAA sports program.
