TRIO TIED FOR FIRST IN NCHSAA 1-A MEN'S GOLF; BISHOP McGUINNESS WITH ONE SHOT LEAD IN TEAM STANDINGS
SOUTHERN PINES-- Defending individual champion Greg Bunner of Gastonia Highland Tech is among a trio of golfers tied for the top spot after Monday's first day of the 13th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A men's golf championships at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club.
Bunner had a two-over 73 to tie with Mitchell's Thomas Buchanan and West Montgomery's Ethan Sasser for first place. Last year's runner-up, Stanhope Johnson of Kernersville Bishop McGuinness ,and his teammate Mark Sowinski are tied for fourth in the individual standings, just two shots off the pace.
The championship is being contested on a par-71, 6,543-yard layout for the NCHSAA event.
Johnson and Sowinski helped lift McGuinness to a narrow one-shot lead over West Montgomery in the team standings. Bishop McGuinness recorded a 311 to West Montgomery's 312, with Highland Tech in third at 316.
The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.
Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.
A total of 83 golfers began play in the two-day tournament. Action will resume at eight o'clock on Tuesday morning.

SALISBURY'S DIXON TAKES LEAD, LIFTS TEAM TO FIRST PLACE IN NCHSAA 2-A GOLF
BUIES CREEK-- Salisbury's Roy Dixon grabbed the individual lead and propelled his team to the top of the team standings after Monday's first day of the 25th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men's golf championships at the Keith Hills Country Club.
Dixon's 71, the only sub par round on the day on the par-72, 6,500-yard layout, gave the Salisbury golfer a two-shot lead over Thomas Lilly of Maiden and Hampstead Topsail's Patrick Morris. Taylor Coalson of North Surry is fourth.
Dixon was 13th in the individual standings in last year's 2-A state tournament.
Salisbury, fourth in the team race in 2009 , holds a seven-shot edge over Topsail after recording a 302 on Monday. North Lincoln, the defending team champion, is in third, one shot behind Topsail. Carrboro and North Henderson are tied for fourth.
The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.
Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.

HICKORY'S POSTEN FIRES FOUR UNDER 68 TO TAKE LEAD IN NCHSAA 3-A GOLF
FOXFIRE VILLAGE--Hickory's J.T. Posten fired a four-under par 68 to post a commanding lead after Monday's first day of play in the 25th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men's golf championships at the Foxfire Golf and Country Club.
Posten, who was seventh in last year's 3-A tournament, holds a six-shot advantage over the field. Daniel Brantley of Asheboro and Philip Lindler of Fred T. Foard outside of Newton are knotted in second at 74, and a trio of golfers are tied for fourth at 75.
The championship is being held on a par-72, 6600-yard layout for the NCHSAA event.
Hickory, the defending team champion, has a four-shot edge over Northern Guilford in the team standings, with Foard in third just five shots back. Hickory recorded a 304 in Monday's action, but there are six other schools within 11 shots of the team lead.
The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.

PINEHURST--Defending individual state champion Michael Cromie of Cary Green Hope is one of three golfers tied for the lead after Monday's opening round of play in the 74th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men's golf championships at Pinehurst number eight.
Cromie, Logan Harrell of Huntersville Hopewell and Grayson Murry of Raleigh Leesville Road each fired two-under par 70 in the first round. The championship is being contested on a par-72 layout set at 6,658 yards or the NCHSAA event.
Jack Cotrill of Charlotte Myers Park and Nathan Pevyhouse of Green Hope are three shots off the pace, tied for fourth.
Defending team champion Green Hope is in position for another state title, with an eight-shot lead over Raleigh Leesville Road. Green Hope had the only sub-300 round of the day with a 295 team score. Clayton and Southern Pines Pinecrest are knotted at third with 309 totals and Alexander Central is at 310.
