34TH ANNUAL NCHSAA VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS SCHEDULED
RALEIGH – The 34th edition of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state volleyball championships are slated for Saturday at historic Reynolds Coliseum on the North Carolina State University campus.
With two unbeaten teams and another three have suffered only a single loss, the overall strength of these field is excellent. And with the NCHSAA in a new realignment period, some of the perennial powers have changed even classifications.
The opener of the quadruple header at noon is for the 1-A championship, sending Pender (26-2) against Rosman (31-1). Pender is making its fifth trip to the finals but is still looking for its initial NCHSAA volleyball championship. Rosman, paced by middle hitter Joanna Whitmire, is back in the finals for the first time since it won the 2002 crown.
The 2-A championship at 2:30 sends the Greyhounds of North Surry, unbeaten in 32 starts, against Cedar Ridge's Red Wolves (26-4). North is in the finals for the first time in 21 years and is led by Northwest Conference Player of the Year Kara Hodges. Cedar Ridge will counter with its Carolina 9 Player of the Year, outside hitter LeeAnne Maultsby.
A couple of perennial powers will meet for the 3-A title, a rematch of last year's 2-A championship won by West Henderson. The Lady Falcons (27-1), in the finals for the ninth time and winners of five state championships, go against Cardinal Gibbons (24-1) in what should be a great match.
The state’s all-time winningest volleyball coach and NCHSAA Hall of Famer Jan Stanley is the West Henderson head coch and a whopping 698 career victories. The Lady Falcons' only loss on the season was in the season opener against Gibbons.
Christina Dorismond, Michelle Fadool and Avery Striebel are three seniors who provide plenty of offense for Cardinal Gibbons. Dorismond will play at Furman next year, Fadool at Wingate and Striebel at LSU.
The 7:30 p.m. match for the 4-A championship sends defending state 4-A champ Greenville Rose (24-0) against the Knights of Charlotte Ardrey Kell (23-5), a school that opened its doors just three years ago. Rose, nationally ranked by MaxPreps, is led by the school's all-time kill leader Emily Neideffer and big hitter Caroline Douglas.
Kell, just 12-11 a year ago, gets outstanding play from Samantha Gostling and Diana Marren.
Time Warner Cable will be providing television coverage of all four state championships on Carolina On Demand, channel 1234 on Time Warner systems. The games will be available starting on the afternoon of Wednesday, November 11, on Time Warner Cable systems statewide.
Wendy’s is the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program. The Raleigh Sports Consortium, the City of Raleigh and the Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau serve as host city sponsors for this event.
