CHAPEL HILL— The duo of juniors Elijah Shabazz and Trae Smith of Wakefield High School have been named recipients of the NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards.
Each week two athletes in North Carolina High School Athletic Association competition are selected for this award from nominations received from media and school administrators.
In Wakefield’s 69-54 win over Millbrook, Shabazz scored 14 points and was 4-8 in field goals. From the free throw line Shabazz went 6-8. He added 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal and 1 block.
Teammate Smith also helped Wakefield overcome the Wildcats by posting 23 points going 10-15 from the floor. He was perfect from the 3-point line and grabbed 8 rebounds on the night.
Weekly recipients will be recognized on the NCHSAA Website and social media pages. They will also be honored at a banquet for all recipients from this year on April 28th. The deadline for nominations is each Monday at 5 p.m through the online form that can be found here.
