A well-known NCHSAA legend in the coaching and administrative ranks, Toby Webb, passed away yesterday at the age of 96.
He was an outstanding coach that was the driving force behind turning Albemarle into a North Carolina football power. Webb served as head football coach and athletic director while at Albemarle posting a phenomenal record of 103-18-6 while winning two Western North Carolina High School Activities Association crowns while leading the Bulldogs. During later stages of his career, he served as a principal in Albemarle for 12 years and then had a 13-year stint as the superintendent of Albemarle City Schools. Webb was inducted into the NCHSAA Hall of Fame in 1992.
The NCHSAA’s annual awards for outstanding male and female coach of the year was named in his honor in 2006. The Toby Webb Outstanding Coach Award is presented annually at the NCHSAA’s Annual Meeting to a coach nominated by school personnel at the NCHSAA member school where he or she coaches, to have coached for a minimum of 10 years, and have made major contributions to the success of high school athletics at the school, in the community and beyond. Winners receive the award and a $2000 cash stipend.
Webb was born in Tarboro before attending UNC-Chapel Hill where he was a member of the football team. He served three years in the U.S. Marines Corps before earning his master’s degree at UNC and taking the head football position at Albemarle High. He served as a head coach for the North Carolina Coaches Association East-West All-Star game in 1954 and the 1958 North Carolina Shrine Bowl team. In 2010, Webb was honored by the governor with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award.
