Busy week in the NCHSAA Football Record Book

The NCHSAA Record Book had an active week three of the 2016 season and four performers etched their names in the record book during the week.

Despite a 69-55 loss to Ooltewah (TN), Clyde A. Erwin saw incredible performances from a pair of seniors. Quarterback Damien Ferguson attempted an NCHSAA-record breaking 84 passes on the night after his team fell behind early. He completed 49 of those attempts, another state record, for 690 yards, also a record-breaking mark. Six of those passes found the endzone as the Warriors trimmed the lead to seven when Ooltewah recovered an onside kick and scored a late touchdown to ice the win.

Ferguson's 84 attempts is second all-time for Most Pass Attempts in a single game in the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Record Book, just three attempts behind NFHS Record-holder Tyler Hutchinson from Greenville, Illinois set in November of 2013. Ferguson's 690 passing yards took down the NCHSAA record of 667 yards in a game set by Wakefield's Connor Mitch in 2012 against Broughton and is fifth all-time in the nation for passing yards in a single game.

Of Ferguson's 49 completions, 20 of them were to fellow senior C.J. Thompson. The 20 receptions is good enough to tie for second all time in single-game receptions, equaling West Bladen's Malcolm Vaught who caught 20 passes against Terry Sanford back in 2012. Thompson racked up 372 yards on the night surpassing Dakwon Freeman from Currituck's NCHSAA Record for receiving yards in a single game set on November 8th, 2013 versus Hertford County.

Reidsville punt returner Austyn Chestnut tied an NCHSAA record for punt return touchdowns in a game when he returned three punts for scores in a 63-0 win over Morehead. Chestnut scored from 34, 49 and 71 yards which tied East Duplin returner Vishone Kennion's record of three punt return touchdowns in a single game, a mark Kennion set in October 1997 versus Richlands. The three punt return touchdown performance also ties Chestnut for fourth in the nation for single-game punt return touchdowns.

The Wake Forest Cougars defense scratched their names in the NCHSAA Record Book as well as the Cougar defense intercepted seven passes in a 12-6 overtime win over Southeast Raleigh. The seven interceptions ties the Cougars for third all-time in team interceptions in a single game. The record is held jointly by the Hickroy 1929 team that intercepted eight passes against Glen Alpine in a 107-0 win and the 1997 Bandys team that intercepted eight passes against West Rowan in 1997.
