Maiden Names New Head Football Coach

James “Buddy” King has been named the new head football coach at Maiden High School.

The Observer-News-Enterprise of Newton was among the media outlets which covered the press conference last week.

King served the past two seasons as offensive line coach at Goose Creek High School in South Carolina and has an extensive collegiate background.

King’s background includes stints as offensive line coach in college football programs, including Clemson (1975-83), Wake Forest (1984-86), South Carolina (1987-88), Louisiana State (1991-92) and Arkansas (1993-94). He also coached for a year in professional football as he spent a season as the offensive line coach for the Arizona Wranglers in the old United States Football League (USFL).

King takes over the Maiden football program from Brian Brown, who led the Blue Devils to a 30-20 record and four postseason berths over the past four seasons. He is only the sixth Maiden head coach since 1955, and for many years NCHSAA Hall of Famer Tom Brown, Brian’s father, served in that capacity.

The new Maiden coach is a 1974 graduate of Clemson, where he was a three-year starter and team captain in 1972. He was out of coaching from 1995 to 2009 and worked in business before getting back on the sidelines.
