TWO NEWTON-CONOVER TEAMS ADVANCE TO STATE DOUBLES SEMIFINALS
CARY– Two Newton-Conover High School teams have advanced to the doubles semifinals after Friday’s action in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men’s tennis championships at the Cary Tennis Center.
The Red Devil pairs of Hang Lak Choi and Ryan Lampe along with Austin Adams and John Tate each won a pair of matches in straight sets to advance to Saturday morning’s semifinals. Choi and Lampe will face Evan Day and Jesse Massucco of Wilkes Central, while Adams and Tate will take on Ray Webb Parker and Ben Cheaney of Shelby.
In an interesting twist, both Choi and Lampe played in the doubles final a year ago when it was an all-Newton-Conover championship. Choi and Will Huggins teamed to beat Lamp and Dillon Cervantez in the 2010 final.
In singles, the four semifinalists all advanced Friday with a pair of wins. All were in straight sets, except Steven Page of Salisbury had to rally past John Reid of Newton-Conover in the quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Saturday morning’s singles matches will pit Jordan Bailey of Hampstead Topsail against Korey Lovett of Brevard, while South Iredell’s Patrick Hensley battles Page.
Action is slated to start at 9 a.m.
