It has happened only on rare occasion in major league baseball, but at least up until now there was no record of it happening in a North Carolina High School Athletic Association baseball game.
In a recent game between Overhills and Fayetteville Westover, Todd Matthews of Overhills succeeded in playing all nine positions in a single game. Matthews either was officially credited with a putout or played at least two outs of an inning at every position.
Matthews is Overhills’ regular catcher, so he started there. He then moved to first base, second, pitcher, shortstop, third base, center field, left field, right field, back to short and ended at third.
Overhills broke the game open in the fifth and went on to record a 12-2 victory in six innings, with the game called due to the 10-run rule. Matthews went two for two and drove in a run.
Matthews is captain of the Overhills team and earned all-conference honors as a catcher last year as a freshman. The 5-4, 130-pound athlete is also an honor student.
