NCHSAA State Championships In Winter Track Set

NCHSAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN WINTER TRACKSET FOR SATURDAY IN FAYETTEVILLE

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina High School Athletic Association state championships in two classifications of track will be decided on Saturday, but this year’s championships are unique.

For 24 years the NCHSAA has offered indoor track as a sport, but the only indoor facility in the state, the Eddie Smith Indoor Arena on the UNC campus is involved in construction this year and is unavailable. Therefore, this year’s championships are classified as “winter track” and will include indoor events but run at an outdoor facility.

The championships will be held at Daskal Stadium at the Reid Ross Classical School in Fayetteville. Competition will be classified as 4-A and then 1-A/2-A/3-A together for the fifth consecutive year.

The championships will be run as a “super meet,” with field events starting at 10 am and running event finals also starting at 10 am, with one of the classifications competing first in each event followed by the other class in that particular event.

Southeast Raleigh has been an indoor track force in both men’s and women’s competition in the 4-A classification, winning the last three of the last four state titles in both. Southeast swept both state crowns in the 2010 meet.

Burlington Cummings has captured all four of the 1-A/2-A/3-A women’s state titles while Asheville was the 2010 team champ on the men’s side.

Wendy’s is the presenting sponsor of the NCHSAA sports programs. The Cumberland County schools are serving as the hosts for the championships.
