Cory Morgan- Hickory (1994-97)
Hickory High School’s Cory Morgan has accomplished a rare feat as he broke into in the state record books for his performances on the gridiron and the soccer pitch.
In three years of service on the Hickory football team, he ranks in the top ten for career extra points (168). His 39 extra points in the 1996 season ranks him third all-time as he helped lead Hickory to the 3A state championship. However, keeping busy during the fall, he also found time to notch a few records on the soccer field as well.
A four-year standout for the Red Tornadoes, Cory currently ranks in the top-25 in all time career goals (112). He also set the all-time records for career assists and assists in a season with, 169 and 43, respectively, en route to all-state honors his sophomore, junior and senior years.
Statistically, Morgan played more of a distributor role in high school, but when he left Lenoir-Rhyne College he was one of the all-time leading scorers in school history. He had a standout career, leading the team in scoring his first three years on campus. His junior year highlighted his career as set the school’s all-time mark for goals in a season (19) and tied the mark for points (41) in a season en route to earning 1st Team All-Conference and Conference Tournament MVP honors. He led the Bears to the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) tournament title after finishing a modest fourthduring the regular season.
By the time Morgan had played his final game at L-R, he was the all-time leader in games played (76), career points (103) and career goals (43). His career point and goal totals rank him among the all-time leaders for the SAC as well. Most notably, Morgan was the first player in school history to earn all-conference honors all four years.
Cory Morgan’s exceptional career has earned him a place as one of the “Names in the Books.”
