Hunter Huss Hires Women’s Basketball Coach

GASTONIA— Jason Cabe has been named the new women’s basketball coach at Hunter Huss High School, according to the Gaston Gazette.

The school has announced the hiring of Cabe to replace Ashlei Lowman, who found a job closer to home about a week before the school year began.

Cabe, 32, is in his fourth year as a physical education teacher at Hunter Huss, where he has coached baseball and basketball. He was head junior varsity men’s basketball coach during the 2009-10 season. He also served as JV head baseball coach and assistant varsity baseball coach during his first two years at Huss.

The school also announced the hiring of Melissa Bess as varsity women’s assistant coach. Bess, a Gastonia resident, has been teaching at Casar Elementary School but will take a physical education teaching job at Hunter Huss on Oct. 10. Bess will also serve as junior varsity girls head coach if the school has a team. The school did not have enough players to field a junior varsity team last year.

Before coming to Huss, Cabe spent four years at Bessemer City Middle School as head coach for girls softball, boys basketball and baseball. He began his coaching career as head baseball coach at Holbrook Middle School during the spring of 2004 while student teaching in Gaffney, S.C

He graduated in 1997 from South Point High School in Belmont, where he was named basketball team MVP as a junior and senior, baseball team MVP as a senior and twice earned all-conference honors in baseball. He continued his athletic career as a baseball player at North Carolina A&T, where he pitched for two seasons before undergoing Tommy John surgery and then finished his career at Limestone College.
