Carver To Recognize Championship Teams. Coaches

The recognition will occur on Saturday as part of the four varsity basketball games which make up the Carver Classic.

Carver’s 2001 women’s basketball team, which won the NCHSAA 3-A state title after a remarkable turnaround, will be honored along with its coach, Gerald Carter.

Keith Wilkes, who led Carver to NCHSAA 3-A state football championships in both 1998 and 2002, also will be honored. Wilkes left Carver in 2008 to coach in Georgia, but he resigned from there after the 2010 season.

“We want to recognize those players and thank them for what they did for Carver years ago,” athletics director Aaron Bailey said, according to the Winston-Salem Journal. “Even to this day, we still appreciate what they did. That team got girls basketball started at Carver.”

The recognition of the team and coaches will occur before the final game of the day, when the Carver men play Winston-Salem Prep. The other scheduled games are: Forsyth Country Day-Carver women (3:30); Greensboro Smith-Winston-Salem Prep women (5 p.m.); and R.J. Reynolds-Thomasville men (6:30).
