Perquimans Student Helps Organize Event

PERQUIMANS STUDENT HELPS ORGANIZE EVENT

HERTFORD– Perquimans High School recently hosted a Volley for the Cure breast cancer fund raiser volleyball match that was the brainchild of senior libero Rachel Phthisic (pronounced “tissick”) as part of her graduation project.

Phthisic had been helping plan the match for months, as Perquimans defeated Edenton Holmes 25-12, 25-23, 25-8. The victorious Lady Pirates wore pink and a large crowd was on hand, including several cancer survivors. T-shirts were sold, a raffle was held and pink balloons helped create a festive atmosphere. Pamphlets with information about breast cancer were distributed at the match.

According to the Elizabeth City Daily Advance, the early indication is that the fundraiser brough in about $1,500 for the American Cancer Society.

An outstanding student who ranks seventh in her senior class, Phthisic also plays shortstop on the Perquimans softball team.

The NCHSAA congratulates Rachel Phthisic and Perquimans High School, as well as Holmes, for participating in such a worthy cause and again demonstrating much of what is special about high school athletics.
