HENDERSONVILLE, WINSTON-SALEM PREP ARE TEAM CHAMPS

IN NCHSAA STATE 1-A TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

GREENSBORO – Hendersonville held on to take the team title on Saturday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association men’s 1-A track and field championships at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.

The Bearcats tallied 66.20 points to outdistance second-place South Stokes with 52. Polk was third with 45, followed by Union with 42.20 and Thomasville with 40. There were 41 schools scoring points in the men’s meet.

Polk’s John Wolfe swept victories in both the 800 and the 1600 and earned Most Valuable Performer honors in the men’s meet. Corey Wilkinson of Siler City Jordan-Matthews was a double winner, winning the 100 in 10.71 seconds and the 200 in 22.02 seconds.

Winston-Salem Prep won its first women’s team title, scoring 63 points to 49.33 for runner-up West Wilkes. Three teams were tightly bunched thereafter, with Kernersville Bishop McGuinness placing third with 39 points, Hendersonville fourth with 38 and then Avery in fifth with 37.33.

A total of 39 schools tallied points in the women’s meet.

Jania Bogle of Princeton was the women’s MVP. She took a pair of individual state titles, winning the 100 in a time of 12.47 seconds and taking the 200 in 25.30 while also finishing second in the long jump.

The Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Greensboro Sports Commission, and Chick-Fil-A of downtown Greensboro served as the host city sponsors for the event, and Wendy’s and the Carolina Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
