Freshman Register Takes 3-A Individual Honors

FRESHMAN REGISTER OF WILLIAMS TAKES INDIVIDUAL HONORS,

WILSON FIKE EARNS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP IN NCHSAA 3-A GOLF

FOX FIRE VILLAGE— Freshman Robert Register of Burlington Williams had a one-over par 73 on Tuesday and held on to take medalist honors in the 23rd annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s golf championships at the Fox Fire Resort and Country Club.

The championship was held on the East Course at the Fox Fire Resort and Country Club, a par-72, 6500-yard layout for the NCHSAA event.

Register was in second place behind 2006 champion Michael Muscatell of Charlotte Catholic after Monday’s opening round in difficult, blustery conditions. But Muscatell wound up with an 81 Tuesday to finish in ninth, tied with defending individual champion Robert Hoadley of Cameron Union Pines.

Senior Harold Varner of Gastonia Forestview beat junior Daniel Claytor of Northern Nash on the first hole of sudden death to claim second place. Varner parred the par five playoff hole while Claytor bogied to place third after each finished at 147, two shots off the pace.

Zach Gliarmis of Wilson FIke and Kyle Ham of Eastern Wayne tied for fourth.

Fike, with a stellar 302 score on the final day, took the team title with a 609 total, six shots ahead of Forestview, the first day leader. Burlington Williams was third at 617 and Southeast Guilford placed fourth at 619. The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.

Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.

A total of 84 golfers participated in the two-day tournament. Wendy’s and the Carolinas Ford Dealers are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
