PINEHURST – Three golfers each shot two-over par 75 on Monday to tie for the individual lead after the opening round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s golf championships at Pinehurst number one.

Courtney Taylor of Gastonia Ashbrook, Courtney McKim of Raleigh Wakefield and North Mecklenburg’s Katie Kirk each navigated the 5,713-yard layout in two over par. McKim is the defending individual champion while Taylor finished in a tie for second a year ago, five strokes behind McKim.

Allison Emrey of Charlotte Ardrey Kell is one shot back in fourth while Clayton’s Lizzie Bundy and Jessica Hook of Wilmington Ashley each carded 77’s, two shots off the pace.

A trio of golfers are tied for seventh but are just three shots off the lead, including Tatum Briele of New Bern, Shannon Prunty of Northwest Guilford and Katherine Perry of Raleigh Athens Drive.

Greensboro Grimsley has opened up a five-shot lead over the field in the team standings, with the Whirlies recording a 251 to 256 for second-place Athens Drive. New Bern and Southern Pines Pinecrest are tied for third at 260, while defending team champion Northwest Guilford and Wake Forest-Rolesville are knotted at 262, 11 shots back.
