White Oak Wins Back To Back Titles In 3-A; Gibbons Edges Shelby For 2-A Women's Soccer Crown

BANKS IS MVP AGAIN AS WHITE OAK BEATS CATHOLIC

FOR NCHSAA STATE 3-A WOMEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

CARY—It was back-to-back titles for Jacksonville White Oak and back-to-back Most Valuable Player honors for Tandy Banks.

Banks, a senior forward, scored a pair of goals and earned her second straight championship MVP honor as White Oak edged Charlotte Catholic 3-2 in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A women’s soccer championship on Saturday at Koka Booth Field at the SAS Soccer Park.

White Oak successfully defended its title in its third straight trip to the finals, finishing the season with a 27-1 slate and its third NCHSAA women’s soccer title in the last four years. Catholic, in the finals for a fifth time, ended the year 22-2-3.

Catholic broke on top in the 14th minute when Jennifer Burak hammered home a shot for her 20th goal of the season off an assist from Casey McCormick. But White Oak countered with a pair of goals within a four-minute stretch with the one-two punch of Tandy Banks and Stephanie Rose.

Rose passed to Banks, who knocked in her 49th goal of the season, and then a little later Banks assisted Rose, who found the back of the net for the 40th time this year.

Catholic knotted the score at 2-2 in the 56th minute when a corner kick by Nadia Soussi floated in and Samantha McVeiogh headed it home. But the tie was short lived, for less than two minutes later Banks tallied her second goal of the day for the Lady Vikings.
