Providence Outduels Broughton In 4-A Dual Team Tennis; Topsail, Gibbons, Statesville Win

BURLINGTON – After splitting the singles matches, Charlotte Providence took two of the remaining doubles encounters to nip Raleigh Broughton and win the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s dual team tennis championship 5-4 at the Burlington Tennis Center on Saturday.

Key to the victory for Providence was the play of Ted Monks and Chris Baum. Monks won at number three singles, winning in straight sets over Jack Parks but both in tiebreakers in a match that went well over two hours. Baum dropped the first set in his singles match with J.B. Weaver but rallied to win the tiebreaker that decided the third set and that match.

Then Monks and Baum teamed to win the deciding doubles match, battling past Weaver and Drake Kane in a 10-8 pro set.

Broughton’s record dropped to 22-2 and the Caps were halted in their bid for a ninth NCHSAA dual team title. Providence completed a perfect 17-0 season and won its first state crown in men’ s dual team tennis after finishing second last year to East Chapel Hill.

Statesville had little trouble in securing the 3-A championship, winning all six singles matches in straight sets to defeat Burlington Williams 6-0.

Statesville dropped only 13 games in sweeping those 12 sets, led by number-one singles player and state 2-A singles champion Preston Spencer. It was the Greyhounds’ first NCHSAA dual team title since 1997 in their fourth appearance in the finals.

Statesville finished with a 13-0 dual team record while Williams was 19-3.

In the 2-A championship Saturday morning, Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons won all the singles matches in straight sets to roll past Newton-Conover 6-0. Paced by singles state champion Will Rollinson, the Crusaders won for the 23rd time against a single loss.

Newton-Conover had a 22-match winning streak snapped and the Red Devils finished their season at 22-2 overall.

The 1-A final went right down to the wire, with Topsail’s third doubles team of Hunter Smith and Nico Hoff winning to capture a 5-3 triumph over Hendersonville.

Hendersonville took the top two singles, but Topsail won the other four and then the victory at the third doubles clinched the state title.

Topsail wound up 20-5 overall while Hendersonville was 16-5.
