Page Wins Fourth Straight NCHSAA Women’s Dual Team Tennis Final; Catholic, Greene Central, Ncssm Win

BURLINGTON – Greensboro Page ran its string of state titles to four in a row with a convincing 5-1 victory over East Chapel Hill in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s dual team tennis championships on Saturday at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Page won the first five singles events and ended its season with a perfect 20-0. East Chapel Hill, which had ended Raleigh Broughton’s string of 12 straight trips to the finals by winning the Eastern Regional title on Thursday, ended 20-3.

Charlotte Catholic earned the 3-A title, blanking Eastern Wayne by a 5-0 count en route to its seventh all-time women’s dual team tennis state crown. Catholic ended its season 20-5 while Eastern Wayne, in its first final ever, wound up 17-2.

Both of the afternoon matches in the lower classifications were 5-4 affairs decided by the number three doubles event. In the 2-A final, Greene Central outlasted defending state champion Salisbury 5-4 when Elizbaeth McLawhorn and Abby Sugg teamed to beat the Salisbury duo of Brooke Johnson and Shea Comadoll 10-4 in a pro set.

Greene Central finished 23-2 and dealt Salisbury its first loss in 23 dual matches.

In the 1-A classification, Durham’s North Carolina School of Science and Math nipped Bishop McGuinness by a 5-4 count, as Meghan McCann and Sarika Mendu of NCSSM downed the Bishop McGuinness pair of Molly Riazzi and Rebecca McCuniff 10-6 in the decisive third doubles.

McGuinness suffered its only loss of the season after 18 dual-team wins while NCSM finished 22-1 overall.
