Final Wachovia Cup State Standings Announced

Wachovia Bank, N.A., along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the final standings for the Wachovia Cup competitions for the 2006-07 sports season.

The Wachovia Cup award, sponsored by Wachovia Bank, N.A., and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. The Wachovia Cup program concluded in its 28th year in 2006-07.

Kernersville Bishop McGuinness won its first-ever cup in the 1-A classification, slipping past defending champion Hampstead Topsail. Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons successfully defended its 2-A crown and Skyland T.C. Roberson captured its third consecutive first-place finish in the 3-A classification. Charlotte Providence paced the 4-A classification, taking its fourth straight Wachovia title.

In the 1-A classification, Topsail had a great spring and placed in five out of the seven spring sports, but Bishop McGuinness earned the Cup by finishing second in women’s soccer, fourth among 1-A teams in men’s golf and sixth in women’s outdoor track. McGuinness had 487.5 points to 450 for runner-up Topsail. Polk County, paced by a trip to the women’s soccer state semifinals, wound up third with 397.5 points.

Champion Cardinal Gibbons clinched the top spot in 2-A by a big margin, tallying 762.5 points to 405 for second-place West Henderson. Gibbons won state crowns in men’s dual team tennis and women’s soccer and finished second in both outdoor track championships as well as men’s golf. West Henderson was third in men’s golf and made it to the quarterfinals in women’s soccer. Shelby wound up third overall with 382.5 points, with its top spring performance a women’s soccer state runner-up finish.

T.C. Roberson held on to its lead after the winter season to record 550 points, 110 ahead of second-place Charlotte Catholic in the 3-A classification race. Roberson was the state 3-A women’s outdoor track champ and made it to the state quarterfinals in both men’s tennis and women’s soccer, while Catholic was the women’s soccer runner-up and tied for third in men’s tennis to land in second place overall. Asheville was third with 335 points with a second-place position in men’s track.

In the 4-A classification, Charlotte Providence clinched first with 465 points, leaving Raleigh Broughton in second place with 349.17 points. Providence used a state championship in men’s tennis and third-place finish in men’s golf to secure its fourth straight cup. Broughton was runner-up in men’s tennis to Providence and tied for fourth in men’s golf. Chapel Hill, buoyed by a state runner-up finish in softball, wound up third at 337.5 points.

Wachovia Cup points are determined by a system based on performance in state-championship events. All schools that finish in the top eight positions (plus ties) earn points. In the playoff events involving teams from more than one classification, Wachovia Cup points are awarded based on the school’s standing against other schools in its own classification. If fewer then eight schools from a classification compete in a sport, only those schools that are represented are eligible to receive the Wachovia Cup points.

Points are awarded for all sports as follows: 50 for first, 45 for second, 40 for third, 35 for fourth, 30 for fifth, 25 for sixth, 20 for seventh and 15 for eighth. In the event of a tie, the schools receive an equal number of points based on the number of teams that tie and the number of teams that finish higher in the standings. Five points are awarded for each sanctioned sport in which a school competes.

Wachovia Cup standings are announced three times each school year: once after the fall and winter sports, and concluding with the winner after the spring sports season ends in June. The engraved silver cups are presented during NCHSAA Day activities at UNC-Chapel Hill each fall.
