Championships Decided In NCHSAA Men’s Dual Team Tennis

BURLINGTON – East Chapel Hill held off Charlotte Providence 5-2 to take the 4-A state championship in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association men’s dual team tennis finals at the Burlington Tennis Center on Saturday.

East Chapel Hill made the move successfully from 3-A to 4-A, as the Wildcats had been in nine state 3-A finals and had won six state crowns but moved up to 4-A this year in the new realignment. Mike Greenberg of East, who had won the 4-A singles championship last weekend after winning the 3-A title a year ago, won his match at number one singles.

The victory by Colin Egan and Willy Sendor for the Wildcats at the number-two doubles sealed the win in the battle of unbeatens. East finished at 24-0 while Providence lost for the first time in 15 starts.

Hickory, in the dual team championships for the fourth consecutive year, won its second 3-A NCHSAA men’s title by rolling past Burlington Williams 6-0. Hickory swept to victory in straight sets in all six singles matches to earn the title.

State 3-A champ Andrew Crone of Hickory beat George Kernodle 7-5 and 6-4 in the top match, a rematch of last week’s state championship in singles which Crone won, 7-5, 6-1.

The Red Tornadoes finished with 17 wins in 18 dual matches while Burlington Williams wound up the season 19-5.

In the 2-A classification, Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons blanked Brevard 6-0, winning all six singles in straight sets and yielding only 14 games in the 12 sets that were played.

Gibbons posted its 19th win in 20 matches and Brevard closed its season at 15-4.

Mount Airy successfully defended its 1-A crown by shutting out Hampstead Topsail 6-0. Mount Airy won all of the singles matches in straight sets led by number one player William John, who won two state singles titles and was runner-up twice during his brilliant prep career.

Mount Airy was 17-5 on the campaign.
