Wachovia Cup State Standings For Winter Sports Listed

Wachovia Bank, N.A., along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, today announced the standings for winter sports in the Wachovia Cup competitions for the 2005-2006 sports season.

The Wachovia Cup award, sponsored by Wachovia Bank, N.A., and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. The Wachovia Cup program is in its 27th year.

Polk County used an outstanding winter season in the 1-A classification to vault from eighth place after the fall into the top spot over fall leader Hampstead Topsail. Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons continues to pace the 2-A classification while Charlotte Catholic remains on top among 3-A schools. In the 4-A classification, Charlotte Providence and Apex are in a deadlock for first place with fall leader Charlotte Myers Park dropping into fifth.

In the 1-A classification, Polk County was the top finishing school in its classification in both men’s and women’s indoor track and also picked up points in wrestling by finishing tied for fifth in the dual team competition. Polk jumped to the top spot with 447.5 points, five ahead of Topsail. Topsail’s winter points included a second-place finish in wrestling.

Hendersonville is third in the 1-A standings with 217.5 points, picking up playoff points in both men’s and women’s swimming, with a fourth-place showing among 1-A women’s swimming teams and a tie for seventh in men’s swimming, along with a tie for fifth in women’s basketball.

In the 2-A classification, Cardinal Gibbons holds a 100-point lead over second-place West Henderson. Gibbons captured the state crown in 2-A women’s swimming and was second in men’s swimming to total 347.5 points. West placed fourth among 2-A schools in women’s swimming and had a tie for fifth in men’s basketball to earn its total of 247.5. Reidsville is in third place with 230 points, aided by a second-place finish in its class in men’s indoor track and fourth spot in men’s swimming. Hillsborough Cedar Ridge, with points in both men’s and women’s swimming and points for second place in the 2-A class in women’s indoor track, is in fourth at 212.5, just two and a half points ahead of Salisbury, the runner-up in the 2-A women’s basketball tournament.

In the 3-A classification, T.C. Roberson moved from a tie for third after the fall into the top spot with playoff scoring finishes in five of seven winter sports for a total of 402.5 points. Roberson was tops among 3-A teams in men’s indoor track and second in women’s indoor track, while also benefiting from a third-place finish in women’s swimming and fourth in men’s swimming. Fall leader Charlotte Catholic slipped into second despite taking top honors in both swimming championships with 365 points. Mooresville is in third with 270, aided by a tie for fifth in wrestling and fourth place in women’s swimming.

Burlington Williams holds down fourth with 258.75 points.

In the 4-A classification, Providence and Apex each have 280 points to share the top spot, 10 ahead of North Mecklenburg. Providence won the 4-A women’s swimming title and placed seventh in men’s swimming for its winter playoff points, while Apex was the runner-up in the 4-A women’s basketball championship and third in women’s indoor track. North Mecklenburg’s top winter finish was second place in the 4-A men’s basketball tournament. Chapel Hill is in fourth at 267.5, aided by a second-place in the women’s swimming championships, third in men’s swimming, and tie for fifth in dual-team wrestling.

Wachovia Cup points are determined by a system based on performance in state-championship events. All schools that finish in the top eight positions (plus ties) earn points. In the playoff events involving teams from more than one classification, Wachovia Cup points are awarded based on the school’s standing against other schools in its own classification. If fewer then eight schools from a classification compete in a sport, only those schools that are represented are eligible to receive the Wachovia Cup points.

Points are awarded for all sports as follows: 50 for first, 45 for second, 40 for third, 35 for fourth, 30 for fifth, 25 for sixth, 20 for seventh and 15 for eighth. In the event of a tie, the schools receive an equal number of points based on the number of teams that tie and the number of teams that finish higher in the standings. Five points are awarded for each sanctioned sport in which a school competes.

Wachovia Cup standings are announced three times each school year: once after the fall and then the winter sports, and concluding with the winner after the spring sports season ends in June. The engraved silver cups are presented during NCHSAA Day activities at UNC-Chapel Hill each fall.
