Watauga’s Evans, R.j. Reynolds Pair Take Titles In 4-A Women’s Tennis

RALEIGH— Second-seeded Anna Lee Evans of Watauga survived a three-set match in a morning semifinal and went on to win the singles crown on Saturday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association women’s state 4-A tennis championships at Millbrook Exchange Park.

Evans, who lost only three games in four sets in Friday’s play, had to beat a pair of Redfern sisters from Charlotte’s Harding University on Saturday. She beat Kimber in the semifinals by 6-0, 4-6 and 6-3, and then downed Shondra Redfern in the championship match, 6-2, 6-4.

Shondra Redfern got to the finals the hard way, dropping the first set of her semifinal at love and then roaring back to oust the number-one seed, Beata Debinski of Winston-Salem Mount Tabor, 0-6, 6-3, 7-5.

In doubles, the top-seeded pair of Kayla Duncan and Morgan Rogers of Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds took the championship after finishing as the state runners-up in doubles a year ago. Duncan and Rogers got past Teresa Wang and Jennifer Marvin of North Mecklenburg, the third-seeded team, in the finals by a score of 7-6 (8), 6-4.

Wang was the 4-A singles champion a year ago.

Wendy’s and Ford are the presenting sponsors of the NCHSAA sports program.
